Rev. T. Llechid Jones Manuscripts

A collection of manuscripts created and compiled by T. Llechid Jones. There are notebooks with antiquarian notes regarding the history of places where he served. An essay on the history of Llanllechid church for example, and notes and papers on such places as Betws-y-Coed, Llanrwst, Colwyn Bay and Ysbyty Ifan, and on the history and pedigrees of notable families and lists of the clergy of the diocese of Bangor.

There are letters and papers (some copy letters). One of the correspondents is Rev. R. Rhys Hughes of Glanogwen. Also notes on various Bishops and Clergymen, including prints of a few individuals, along with transcripts of documents.

An essay on Caerwys antiquities, Flintshire is the work of Rev. T.P. Edwards (Caerwyson), 1886, and research into the Clayton family of Lea Hall, Shropshire was conducted by H.R. Hughes of Kinmel.

Also included are the sermons of Rev. William Lloyd, Curate of Llandegai, and teacher at Friars School, Beaumaris which date from 1748 - 1761, as well as records relating to the Anglesey Hunt.

Born in Tyddyn Uchaf, Llanllechid, Wales, Thomas Llechid Jones was educated at the University College of North Wales and at St David's College Lampeter. He married Elizabeth Dolben Jones in 1917.

T. Llechid Jones served in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merionethshire and Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire as a Curate, he then became Vicar of Ysbyty Ifan and then Llysfaen, Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire respectively. Finally, he became Rector of Llangynhafal, Denbighshire.

He was secretary of the Cambrian Archaeological Association for Denbighshire and a member of the Council of the Welsh Bibliographical Society.

He composed essays for entry in Eisteddfod competitions on literary and historical subjects and wrote articles for various Welsh journals e.g. Yr Haul. Amongst his hobbies were book collecting and local history. In particular, he took an interest in the careers of Archbishop John Williams and Hugh Owen of Gwenynog, Anglesey.

T. Llechid Jones died in 1946.

The papers were received at different occasions and have been listed separately and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts . There is no apparent system of arrangement.

Items 5322 - 5335 were received directly from the library of T. Llechid Jones. The second deposit, items 5913 - 5915, were purchased from Mrs Llechid Jones. The last two deposits were presented by Mrs Beryl Fogg of Llandegfan, daughter of T. Llechid Jones.

Item 5322 was once in the possession of Rev. J. Williams Ellis, rector of Llanaelhaearn, 1845-1879. Item 5335, the Anglesey Hunt Records, were once owned by G.R. Cox, Min-y-Garth.

Held at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth are a few manuscripts from the Library of T. Llechid Jones, known as the T. Llechid Jones Collection.
