Administrative / Biographical History
John Sinclair Shields (1903-) was Headmaster Wem Grammar School, 1934-47; Queen Mary's School, Basingstoke, 1947-56; and Peter Symonds School, Winchester, 1957-63. He was a member of the committee on broadcasting, known as the 'Pilkington Committee', appointed by the Postmaster General in 1960 'to consider the future of the broadcasting services in the United Kingdom'. The committee consisted of Sir Harry Pilkington (chairman), H.Collinson, Elwyn Davies, Joyce Grenfell, Richard Hoggart, E.P.Hudson, Professor F.H.Newark, J.S.Shields, R.L.Smith-Rose, Elizabeth Whitley and W.A.Wright. D.G.C.Lawrence was secretary and Miss S.P.M.Fisher, assistant secretary.
