Administrative / Biographical History
This private bank was formed in Tonbridge by Thomas Beeching, a draper. He had opened a shop in Church Lane in about 1789 and conducted some banking business from this date. By 1815 Beeching had begun to issue bank notes. Branches were opened at Tunbridge Wells (1826), Hastings (1859), Southborough (1874) and Bexhill-on-Sea (1885). The bank, seriously weakened by the financial speculation of a partner, was acquired in 1890 by Lloyds. Three members of the Beeching family stayed on as branch managers.
