Diary of Doris Birkin of Lincoln, recording her journey to Poland, c. 1930s

Scope and Content

The diary describes a visit by Doris Birkin to Poznan, Poland. It records the journey fromLincoln to Poznan by train and ferry and the things that she spent her time doing in Poznan whileher companion, 'Cyril', was engaged at an exhibition. It is not possible to establish whichexhibition is in question. Poznan has historically been a centre for Polish and International tradefairs and the diary gives no clear chronological clue. The ease of travel described in the diary andthe type of notebook in which the diary is written would suggest that Doris made the journey in the1930s. The diary runs from 14 April to 29 May of the unknown year.

Administrative / Biographical History

No details are recorded about the background or life of Doris Birkin. Her companion on thisjourney to Poznan, Poland is described as 'Cyril', perhaps her husband. Cyril was working at aPoznan trade exhibition in Poland in some capacity. He was probably a salesman since he had'catalogues' confiscated at the Polish border. At one point he supervises the packing of the'engine' at the end of the show suggesting that this was the item he was displaying.
