F.W. Maitland: Letters to Dr. Joseph Redlich

Scope and Content

The following letters were written by Professor and Mrs. Maitland to Dr. Josef Redlich of Vienna, author of 'Local government in England' (published in German 1901, in English 1903) and 'The procedure of the House of Commons' (published in German 1905, in English 1908). They mostly concern an essay by Maitland on English trusts and corporations for a Germanic readership, which Redlich offered to translate. They also contain references to Maitland's health, his thanks for German publications sent by Redlich, and arrangements for Redlich's visits to Cambridge. The letters were deposited on permanent loan in Cambridge University Library in 1972 by the Selden Society, to which they had been presented by Redlich's widow.
