Records of The Rowntree Society

The Rowntree Society was founded in York in 2001 to ‘further knowledge about the lives and legacy’ of the Rowntree family. It became a registered charity in 2004.
The society maintains a website giving detailed histories of Rowntree family members, businesses and other related organisations. It also advises on new Rowntree projects and organises events to promote the ‘Rowntree story’ in York, for which it has produced a range of accompanying educational materials.
The society is composed of a board of nine trustees. It receives funding from the Joseph Rowntree Trusts and from grant making trusts and private individuals.

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in 2015.
