Scope and Content

This collection contains: signed minutes of board and standing committee, 1869-1922; returns of average iron selling prices and related records, 1869-1918; annual financial statements of the Steel Ingot Makers' Association, the Board of Conciliation and Arbitration for the Manufactured Iron and Steel Trade of the North of England and the North of England Iron and Steel Manufacturers' Association, 1885-1921; evidence to Royal Commission, 1867; reports of arbitration proceedings, 1869-1896; agreements with workers' representatives, 1901-1920.

Administrative / Biographical History

This body was established on 22 March 1869 under the title Board of Arbitration and Conciliation of the North of England Manufactured Iron Trade. It consisted of representatives of employers and operatives from iron works in Northumberland, Durham and the North Riding of Yorkshire. It was one of the bodies which merged in 1922 to form the Iron and Steel Trades Employers' Association.
