Scope and Content

This archive contains the following material:

- Printed copy, possibly a proof, of 'The Nucleus For a Catalogue of The Works of William Faithorne Senr., The Delineator and Line Engraver' by William Fleming, 1870. Includes foreword by Fleming. Also contained is a folder containing 12 pages of the handwritten original draft of the catalogue and a letter to Fleming from his publisher G. R. Griffith, 9 June 1870.

- Notebook titled 'Faithorne Catalogue', content is handwritten and the inside page gives a fuller title of 'List of Prints by Faithorne collected by William Fleming M.D. between 1818 and 1862 contained in two volumes.' This is the original catalogue used by Fleming for prints which are now housed in the NPG Reference Collection.

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr William Fleming (1790-1880) of Rowton Grange, Cheshire was a print collector. Fleming began collecting books and portrait prints in 1814 and drew upon his extensive print collection to extra-illustrate many of the published works in his library. He collected an almost complete set of prints by the elder William Faithorne (1616-1691).
