Maps and survey of farms and estates belonging to W. A. Roberts in the parishes of Packwood, Tanworth, Rowington and Hatton, Warwickshire; and papers relating to Tidbury Green Farm, Solihull, Warwickshire, part of the estate of the late H.A.W. Aylesbury.
These items, comprising material from two different provenances, reflect the widespread occurrence of the division of large estates following the effects of World War I. The volume of maps with survey illustrates the component parts of one estate of one man, holdings which then became known as (part of) the Aylesbury estate, named thus after H. A. W.Aylesbury a later owner. The late 19th century list of mortgages may indicate Aylesbury's need to raise cash; and the selling off in 1918 of at least one of the estate farms after his death could indicate his family's continued need for funds or the lack of ability or interest in retaining that property.
The items in MS650/B complement the volume of maps and surveys in MS650/A, though Tidbury Green Farm itself is not included in the latter: it was presumably purchased or otherwise obtained to become part of Aylesbury's estate at some point after c. 1813 but prior to 1888 (unless the volume of maps and surveys at MS6650/A/1 merely did not include the whole of the estate).
The early 19th century volume of maps and survey illustrates the desire of landed gentry to have their estates recorded in a decorative, as well as useful, manner.
