Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury was a Whig politician and moral philosopher.(At the request of his grandfather, the philosopher John Locke had superintended part of his childhood education.) After a number of political setbacks, and dismissal from the appointment as Vice-Admiral of Dorset, Shaftesbury left England for Holland. In 1711 he went to Naples and died there in 1713
