Scope and Content

Research notes from Professor Elkan's Lesotho manpower survey, 1963, and follow-up study of 1965.
The small archive includes: preliminary results of the 1966 census; revenue totals; extracts from the Froneman report on Basotho workers in South Africa; press-cuttings; educational statistics; and notes of conversations with Joe Molefi, Denis Cowen and others.

Administrative / Biographical History

Professor Walter Elkan was an economist and specialised in African economies and patterns of labour. He published Migrants and Proletarians: Labour in the Economic Development of Uganda in 1960, and Introduction to Development Economics (1973). He participated in consultancies for the World Bank and the Overseas Development Agency, worked in Kenya and Uganda (at the Makerere Institute of Social Research) and was to advise the Kenyan and Somali governments. He worked at Durham and Brunel universities where he held chairs in economics. He retired from Brunel in 1987.
