Notebooks and personal papers of Frank Berry (1908-1977), pharmacy student at UniversityCollege Nottingham, 1930-1978

The bulk of the collection consists of student notebooks containing experiments, lecture notes,diagrams, and homework exercises. Titles include: 'Practical chemistry records', 'Theorypharmacognosy', 'Organic chemistry', 'Inorganic chemistry', 'Botany', 'Galenical Pharmacy andpharmaceutical chemistry', 'Practical dispensing', and 'Cryptograms'.

A file of biographical notes includes two photographs of Berry, 1967-1968; photocopy oftypescript reminiscences by John Lock (a colleague of Berry's at Boots) entitled 'Mr Berry and I',1978; photocopy of a letter by Elaine Drewery (Frank's daughter) to John Lock, 1978; obituary from'Boots News', 1978; and a manuscript list of life events (1938-1978).

Frank Berry was born in Blackburn, Lancashire in August 1908 and was educated at Queen ElizabethGrammar School in the town. His long and distinguished career for the Boots company of Nottinghambegan with his employment in a retail branch of Boots in Blackburn, Lancashire. He obtained Bootsand Leverhulme scholarships which enabled him to attend University College Nottingham (now TheUniversity of Nottingham) between 1930 and 1932, attained a diploma, and became a qualifiedpharmaceutical chemist.

Berry joined Boots' analytical department in 1932 and then transferred to the tablet departmentin 1936 of which he became manager in 1946. In 1952 he headed the tablet development team and was arepresentative on the tablet standardisation sub-committee of the Association of the BritishPharmaceutical Industry. Berry retired from Boots in 1968 after 46 years service and died on 2December 1977 aged 69.

The collection has been divided by document type into two sections, the notebooks and otheritems.
