Meth Jones of Canton, Cardiff was born c1876 and died aged 84 in 1960. He spent his early life in Cardiganshire, where his father was employed as a lead miner at Tyncefn. His father emigrated to the South Wales Coalfield when the Cardiganshire lead mines fell upon bad times during the 1870s and 1880s. The family settled at Pontycymer and Meth began work in the coal mines aged 12. He later became a union political organiser and a member of the Labour party. He was treasurer to the Divisional Labour Party. In 1909 Meth was elected as one of the three political agents in South Wales and since 1945 was president of the Cardiff branch of the United Nations Association.
