Notes taken at a lecture of John Adair Lawrie, 1801-1859, professor of Surgery, University of Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content

  • Notes of lectures on surgery, delivered by James Adair Lawrie, University of Glasgow, 1958-1859

Administrative / Biographical History

John Adair Lawrie (1801-1859 ) succeeded Professor John Burns as Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1850 . Lawrie, who graduated MD from the University in 1822, had previously been Professor of Surgery at Anderson's College, Glasgow. Like his predecessor, Burns, Lawrie was not active in asserting the claims of the Regius professors against the faculty or College professors, but both Burns and Lawrie took a leading part in discussions regarding legislation for the medical profession. The Medical Act of 1858 assigned to the Universities of Glasgow and St Andrews one representative in the General Medical Council and Lawrie was nominated in October 1858 by both Universities. Lawrie died the following year in 1859 , and was succeeded by Joseph Lister in 1860.
