The Stone Papers

Papers gathered between 1912 and the 1960s by William G. Stone, Director of Education, Brighton Education Authority, who played a key role in establishing the University of Sussex.

William G. Stone was Education Officer for Brighton from 1947. Between 1954 and 1957, he wrote the key papers to promote the foundation of the University of Sussex. He also organized a series of lectures held in Brighton's Royal Pavilion before putting proposals for the University of Sussex to the education committee. He played a key role in establishing the University, advocating - amongst other things - the inclusion of School of European Studies. In 1964, the University awarded him the Honourary Degree of Doctor of Laws. Stone continued to be a member of Court.

Stone played an extensive role in education across Brighton, creating the colleges of technology, art and education which came together to form a polytechnic - now Brighton University. He died in 1980.
