University of Birmingham Staff Papers: Papers of Carl Chinn

Correspondence, research papers, tape recordings and transcripts relating to his research into the history of bookmaking (betting). Most of the cassette tapes are of interviews conducted by Chinn on the subject of bookmaking, undertaken as part of the research for his book Better Betting with a Decent Feller: Bookmaking, Betting and the British Working Class, 1750-1990 , 1991. The tapes also include recordings of a few radio programmes as well as a few oral history interviews, not made by Carl Chinn, but acquired by him. These include some self recordings. The collection includes typescripts of some of the tapes. A later deposit comprises a transcript of an interview with Bill Brady of Salford, turf accountant, and other related papers.

The tapes are ordered by numbers assigned by Carl Chinn. The numbers begin at 296 and the sequence is incomplete.

The first deposit was made by Professor Chinn in 1994; additions to this collection have been made in 1998 and 1999.
