Scope and Content

Papers of A.W. Ashby relating to John Payne Collier, 20th century, comprising:

  • a biography of Collier (to about 1840), typescript, with some marginal notes in an unidentified hand, illustrated with a few photographs
  • a bibliography of Collier, with appendices, including (d. 1456/2 fols. 153-89) a selection from Coleridge's lectures on Shakespeare (see below).
  • photostats (a few leaves missing) of Collier's shorthand notes (notebooks G and H) of Coleridge's lectures on Shakespeare in 1811-12, with a partial typescript in longhand on blank pages of the photostat. The location of the original notebooks is not known. See Coleridge on Shakespeare. The text of the Lectures of 1811-12, ed. R.A. Foakes (Charlottesville, 1971).
