Administrative / Biographical History

Andrew Pettigrew established the Centre for Corporate Strategy and Change at the University of Warwick in 1985 and served as Dean of the School of Management at the University of Bath before joining Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford as Professor of Strategy and Organisation in 2008. He is a leading expert on the management of strategic change in the private and public sectors.

This material is from a study of the contribution of the management of change to the competitive performance of British firms, which Professor Pettigrew (principal investigator) and the late Dr (later Professor) Richard Whipp undertook between 1986 and 1989. The study was part of an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) project called 'The Management of Strategic and Operational Change' which was itself part of a wider programme of work on the competitiveness of British business. Pettigrew and Whipp studied four different sectors, examining a thirty year period. In each case a higher and lesser performing company were studied by means of employee interviews. A book was produced summarising the research findings: 'Managing Change for Competitive Success' by A M Pettigrew and R Whipp: Oxford: Blackwell (1991).
