Amalgamated Association of Pressmen

Minutes, 1872, 1875-1926; contributions ledger, 1860-1873.

The Amalgamated Association of Pressmen was established in 1834 as the London Union of Pressmen. In 1875 the union split into two societies both calling themselves the London Union of Pressmen. One was referred to as the Amalgamation and the other as the Old Society. In 1879 the Amalgamation was refused registration due to confusion over the name and decided to rename itself the Amalgamated Association of Pressmen in order to secure the benefits of registration. In 1891 members of the Old Society of the London Union of Pressmen decided to join the Amalgamated Association of Pressmen. In 1925 it joined the National Union of Printing, Bookbinding, Machine Ruling and Paper Workers as the Pressmen's Section of the union's Printing Machine Branch.
