Rushforth Papers

Scope and Content

The collection includes his professional notes and working papers. There are runs of letters (four or more) from Thomas Ashby, Cuthbert Atchley, Welbore St Claire Baddeley, Cyril Bailey, Eric Baker, FP Barnard, HE Bishop, FE Brightman, HW Cannon, PB Chatwin, MML Evans, Paul Grosjean, GF Hill, MR James, HS Kingsford, Henry Cornwall Legh, S Perkins Pick, C J Praetorius, E Rivoira, GC Robson, Mrs Rose-Troup and A Hamilton Thompson. Other G McN Rushforth material is held by Great Malvern Public Library.

Administrative / Biographical History

G McN Rushforth was the son of Daniel Rushforth of London, gent. He went up to Oxford as a scholar in 1881, and gained his BA degree in 1885, proceeding to MA in 1888. He was at some period the Director of the British School at Rome.

The papers were catalogued by Janes Renton according to subject matter. Thus five categories cover the papers: sacred, secular, works, miscellaneous and notebooks.

Acquisition Information

Bequeathed by Rushforth, along with his many books and the Italian manuscript Nuovi Ritratti which is catalogued as EUL MS 30b, in 1938.

Custodial History

The papers were re-arranged and listed by Jane Renton on a primitive computer system in October 1994. The list, which is arranged according to predominating theme, does not include dates of documents.
