Scope and Content

Account roll for the estates of Katherine Percy, dowager countess of Northumberland. The lands, spread accross twelve counties, are essentially those she brought to her husband the eighth earl as her share of the inheritance of her father John Nevill, the last Lord Latimer. After the countess's death in 1596, few remained among the central Percy estates. They were used in the 1590s to fund annuities for the countess's younger children, and most were alienated in the early 17th century. Roll of 15 membranes. The is a refugee from either the main series of Percy accounts at Alnwick Castle, or, more likely, from the further family accounts at Petworth House, Sussex (see Mark Nicholls, '"As Happy a Fortune as I Desire", the pursuit of financial security by the younger brothers of Henry, 9th earl of Northumberland', Historical Research, Oct 1992, 297-314).
