Administrative / Biographical History

Westcon Ltd of Ayr, Scotland , started out as Western Contracting Co Ltd which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Turner's Ayr & Newton Breweries Ltd (incorporated 1898  ; since Turner's (Ayr) Ltd 1930  ) and was established after the First World War to oversee the outside catering side of Turner's business, which had become important, especially in connection with the Western Meeting at Ayr Racecourse. The main centre of operations for Western Contracting Co Ltd was the building of the old Ayr Brewery, where brewing had ceased in 1911–1912  . The company was incorporated under the name Westcon Ltd on 10 November 1930  . The share capital was GBP 3,000 divided into 3,000 shares of GBP 1 each. The first objectives of the company were to carry out the businesses of caterers, restaurateurs, purveyors, bakers, confectioners, grocers, provision and produce merchants, tea rooms, tobacconists, wine and spirit merchants, ice cream manufacturers, sweet and preserve manufacturers, amusement caterers and contractors, exhibition promoters, property owners and factors, manufacturers and dealers in aerated and mineral waters and other drinks. In 1961  when Westcon Ltd , along with Turner's (Ayr) Ltd , were acquired by J & R Tennent Ltd , brewers, Glasgow, Scotland , Westcon Ltd was not owned by Turner's (Ayr) Ltd , but was an associated company with the shareholders of Westcon also being shareholders of Turner's. Westcon Ltd had continued to carry on an extensive catering trade and the company held the lease (up to at least 1965  ) of Western House, Ayr . No more is known about the company's history other than it was dissolved on 30 July 1991  .
