Papers of Alice Ivy Hay of Seaton

Personal papers of Alice Ivy Hay, relating to her own research and work, and to the life and works of her husband, Major Malcolm Vivian Hay (1881 - 1962), 1828 - 1981. The collection contains a number of her publications, talks and related papers, 1961 - 1973 and n.d., including bound and transcript copies of Valiant for Truth: Malcolm Hay of Seaton, There was a Man of Genius: Letters to my Grandson Orde Jonathan Wingate, and Under the Eiderdown: the Diary of a Dachshund. There is also a folio of original drawings by John Souter, which illustrated Under the Eiderdown, and related correspondence re. publication of her own works and of Malcolm Vivian Hay's Thy Brother's Blood (Jerusalem, 1980).

A separate series of papers on Orde Wingate, 1961 - 1981, relate to research and publication of There was a Man of Genius: Letters to my Grandson Orde Jonathan Wingate (London: Spearman, 1963). These include essays and correspondence about his life and work, and papers re. the Orde Wingate Institute, Jerusalem. A series of 13 correspondence files, 1892 - 1981, cover many topics, principally relating to her own and her husband's research interests, but also including personal, family and financial matters. A further series of 8 subject-based files relate principally to her own charity work, family memorials, and travels, 1944 - 1978 and n.d..

A small series, catalogued as personalia and other miscellaneous files , 1828 - 1968 and n.d., contains a mixture of papers relating to the Hay family (principally, but not exclusively, Alice Ivy Hay and Malcolm Vivian Hay), including reminisces of various members of the Hay family; papers relating to the Hay of Seaton coat of arms; passport, diaries, notebooks and address books of Malcolm Vivian Hay; original drawings by Malcolm Vivian Hay; his obituary notice and letters of condolence to Alice Ivy Hay. There are, additionally, some photographs of family and friends, 20th c; and a file of newspaper cuttings, 1960s -1970s.

Alice Ivy Wigmore, daughter of Herbert John Wigmore was born in Victoria, Australia. She moved to Britain when she was 12 years old to study at the Royal College of Music in London, and later became a distinguished violinist. Much of her adult life was spent in Northeast Scotland, where she became well known as a public speaker and for her charitable work, in particular, her involvement with the Most Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem and the Red Cross. She married Major Malcolm Vivian Hay (1881 - 1962) of Seaton in 1956, after the death of her first husband, Walter Edward Moncrieff Paterson of Tilliefoure.

Published works include Under the Eiderdown: the Diary of a Dachshund, illustrated by John B. Souter, (Bala: Chapple, 1961); There was a Man of Genius: Letters to my Grandson Orde Jonathan Wingate (London: Spearman, 1963), which was published as a tribute to her son-in-law, Major General Orde Charles Wingate, who was sent to Palestine as an Intelligence Officer during the Second World War; and a biography of her husband, Valiant for Truth: Malcolm Hay of Seaton (London: Spearman, 1971).

The letters and papers of Alice Ivy Hay of Seaton were deposited in the University in 2 sections. The first group came with the papers of her late husband, Major Malcolm Vivian Hay of Seaton (1881 - 1962) in 1964. The remainder were deposited by Mrs Hay in 1981. In the present list the 2 sections have been combined and duplicated copies weeded. It should be noted that the collection contains many items relating to the Malcolm Hay collection (GB 231 MS 2788), and reference should be made to that list for complementary material.
