Administrative / Biographical History

John Whitehorn was born on 19 May 1924. He joined the Federation of British Industry in 1947, serving as first personal assistant to Sir Norman Kipping, the Director-General, and then working under Douglas Walker, the General Secretary. He was appointed Deputy Director (Overseas) in 1961 and a Director in 1963. He retired as Deputy Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry in 1978. In 1974 he was awarded the CMG for services to exports. After he left the CBI he took on a number of directorships, including Lilley Industries and Mitchell Cotts. He died on 30 May 2003.
