Acquisition Information
They were purchased from Mr. W. H. Kingsmill, a descendant, in 1968 with the assistance of the Friends of Lambeth Palace Library and others. For the acquisition see LR/L/9/3.
Custodial History
The papers passed into the hands of his widow, Mary Frances Howley (d. 1860), a quantity of whose own papers are included.
Mrs Howley seems to have destroyed many papers while preserving items of a more personal nature. Consequently few of Howley's official records as Archbishop survive.
