Administrative / Biographical History
Colonel John Patrick Ilbert Fforde (1910-1993), CBE (1960), K.St.J. (1971) was educated at Imperial College, Windsor, entered the Palestine Police in 1931, was seconded for special military service in Syria, 1941, and made Assistant Inspector-General (commanding CID), 1946-1948. He served as Commissioner of Police, Sierra Leone, 1948-1951 and Northern Rhodesia, 1951-1962. He joined Rand Mines, Limited in 1963, was made Manager, Mine Police Department, 1964 and Group Security Adviser, 1965. He worked as Group Security Adviser, Barlow Rand Limited, 1971-1979. His awards include the Colonial Police Medal, 1941, and King's Police and Fire Services Medal, 1945. He was made an honorary fellow of the International Institute of Security (UK), 1969 and a fellow of the South African Institute of Security, 1978.
