A Collection of Nottingham Lace Records, 1900-1961

The records of Cuckson, Haseldine and Manderfield consist of a pattern book, 1900-1910, photographs of a Nottingham trade fair, a brochure marking 60 years of the history of the firm (1949) and some printed matter in the form of trade journals. A typescript report by the Lace Manufacturers Association concerns export potential to Australia and advertising.

The Godfrey Brothers' material comprises financial records (1915-1954), order books (1914-1953) and shipping books (1903-1954).

Other miscellaneous records include lace pattern books (1913-1932).

This is an artificial collection which brings together small groups of records and associated stray materials concerning the design and manufacturing of lace in the East Midlands. Each of the constituent elements retains its own identity under a separate sub-reference.

Cuckson, Haseldine and Manderfield of Stoney Street, Nottingham, first appeared in a Nottinghamshire Trades Directory in 1891. The business was apparently wound up in the late 1960s.

Godfrey Brothers of High Pavement, Nottingham, were a small firm dealing only with Levers lace, trading with a number of other companies in Nottingham. The firm first appeared in a Trades Directory in 1889. It acted also as a stockholder for a number of large shipping houses. The business apparently ceased in the early 1980s.

Material is divided by provenance, and then arranged according to form (e.g. pattern books, ledgers) and chronological order.
