Exercise books of Georgina Benedict

Scope and Content

Two exercise books belonging to Georgina Benedict one of which was used by her to write a journal of a visit, with her sisters, to the Isle of Wight and also, what appear to be, notes for French lessons and also notes on sacraments of the Roman Catholic religion. The other volume has a cover printed in German and inside Georgina has written her name followed by the '[18]56 Stuttgart le 9 November'. She has used the exercise book as a 'Cahier de Mythologie' and contains her notes on mythological characters. Both volumes are written in French throughout.

Administrative / Biographical History

Georgina Maria Benedict (c 1843-1895) was the fourth of five children born to the pianist and composer, Sir Julius Benedict (1804-1885) and his first wife, Therese. Born to Jewish parents in Stuttgart, Julius Benedict studied and worked in Italy, Austria and France before settling in London in 1835 where he resided for the rest of his life. In 1851 the family were living at 2, Manchester Square, London and Georgina confirms that this was still their London address in her journal written in 1853. Her father was a convert to Christianity and in 1871 was knighted. Georgina had two sisters, Adeline Johanna Maria (1836-1883) and Alice Mary Cesanne and two brothers, Ernest Charles Felix Jules (1838-1925) and Julius (1839-1851). As a young girl Georgina lost both her mother and her older brother Julius within a year of each other between 1851 and 1852. Georgina married a doctor, Reginald Palgrave Simpson of Norwich, Norfolk in 1866. The couple had six children and made their home in Weymouth, Dorset.
