Amalgamated Weavers' Association

Scope and Content

Annual reports, 1908-75 (incomplete); wage agreements and piece price lists.

Administrative / Biographical History

The union was founded as the Northern Counties Amalgamated Weavers' Association in 1884. It was a loose amalgamation of local weavers' associations and does not appear to have had a fixed name, being called different things by different member associations. It was renamed the Amalgamated Weavers' Association sometime between 1905 and 1908, at which time its member associations probably fully amalgamated, each becoming a district of the new association. In 1974 it merged with the National Union of Textile and Allied Workers to form the Amalgamated Textile Workers' Union.
