The travel journal contains diaries of two journeys undertaken by Charlotte Lindsay, with her brother Frederick North. The first journey was a tour of Italy in 1815. She records her impressions of the scenery, the towns, sites of historical and artistic interest, the plays and operas attended and the people they socialised with. She also refers to various international events, such as Napolon's escape from Elba and his advance to Paris; the declaration of war by the King of Naples on the Bourbons and his advance to Rome, and the Congress of Vienna. The second journey was a prolonged stay in Paris, 1817-18. She records the entertainments and social engagements that she attended daily and relates the Duke of Wellington's own account of the assassination attempt on him.

Administrative / Biographical History
Charlotte (1770-1849) was the daughter of Lord North and his wife, Anne. She became Lady in Waiting to Queen Caroline and was intimate with the English royal family. She married Lieutenant-colonel the Hon. John Lindsay, son of James, 5th Earl of Balcarres in April 1800.
