Administrative / Biographical History
Francis Thomas McDougall (1817-1886), Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak, studiedmedicine at the University of Malta, King's College, London and Magdalen,Oxford, where he graduated in 1842. On leaving Oxford he superintended ironworks in South Wales. When the ironworks failed he took holy orders andwas ordained in 1845. He was made curate successively of Farnlingham Pigot, St. Mark'sLakenham and of Christ Church, Woburn Square, London. In 1847 he took up anoffer of mission work in Borneo under the auspices of Sir James Brooke, theRajah of Sarawak. The mission grew large enough to warrant a properlyconstituted head and in 1855 he was consecrated Bishop of Labuan andSarawak. In 1867 his health compelled him to return to England and in 1868 heresigned his bishopric. In around the same year he was presented with thevicarage of Godmanchester. He was made Archdeacon of Huntingdon, 1870, Canonof Ely, 1871, Canon at Winchester, 1873 and Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight,1874. In 1886 he was given the vicarage of Milford. In c1842 he married HarrietteBunyon.
