Administrative / Biographical History

Founded in Glasgow in 1833. Originally owners of sailing ships which were all sold off by about 1912. These had been gradually replaced with steam ships from 1906, the vessels engaged in general tramp shipping. The original steam ships were all sold off during the First World War and the company continued in business as insurance brokers, shipbrokers and export merchants. In 1930 it was decided to re-enter ship owning when two vessels, the SS Daldorch and the Dalhanna were completed by William Beardmore & Co Ltd. These were subsequently sold to other Glasgow owners in 1941. The company then continued in business as ship and insurance brokers and export merchants into the early 1960s.
