Scope and Content

A collection of autograph poems with many deletions and corrections. The pieces include two poems on the death of Dr. Juan Perez de Montalban (d. 1638); a sonnet in praise of D. Diego Sanchez Portocarrero's Antiguedad del noble i muy leal Senorio de Molina (Madrid, 1641); a poem on the death of Ferdinand, the Cardinal-Infant (d. 1641); two poems on the death of Queen Isabel (d. 1644); two poems on the death of Prince Baltasar Carlos (d. 1646); a sonnet on the execution of Charles I of England (d. 1649); a sonnet on the death of Martin Suarez de Alarcon, who died during the siege of Barcelona, 17 July 1652; a sonnet in praise of Quevedo's Virtud militante; two epigrams about the merit of a burlesque fable of Pyramus and Thisbe; and a verse letter to Don Antonio Hurtado de Mendoza (d. 1644), the poet of the Buen Retiro palace. The poems include many references to the poet's home, Molina de Aragon. There are arms in pen-and-ink on the first page.

Acquisition Information

The volume was bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps from the bookseller Thomas Thorpe, and became Phillipps MS 2490 in his library. Purchased by the Library at Sotheby's, 16 June 1970.
