Clarke Family Papers

Comprises: 

• Decorative leather bound album containing photographs of the Clarke family and others, and of buildings in the Bangor area, including Penrhyn castle, Bangor pier, taken by Amilius Clarke senior and junior, c. 19th century
• Commission of Eugene Clarke as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Cheshire and Caernarfonshire Volunteer Artillery, 1896
• Certificate of proficiency of Lieutenant Eugene Clarke in infantry and artillery drill, 1897
• Letter from Porter Amphlett and Jones, Solicitors of Conwy to Dr Eugene Clarke of Bangor, relating to compensation to be paid by the Lichfield Brewery Company for any defect caused to Dove Cottage through rebuilding of Castle View Inn, 1904
• Account of J. Evans Jones, Solicitor, Bangor for legal work transacted on behalf of Amilius Clarke of Bangor, 1915
• Letters of administration granted by G. Herbert Reid, District Registrar of the probate division of the High Court to Amilius Clarke relating to his son John Duval Clarke, killed in action in the First World War, 1915
• Counterpart leases of Carlton House, and Column View, Holyhead Road, Bangor
• Account and bill of costs submitted by Porter and Co., Solicitors, Conwy relating to the estate of Amilius Clarke, deceased, and account relating to estate of Mrs Therese Clarke Jones, late of Dovercliffe, Deganwy, 1932

The Clarke family of Bangor, north Wales, included Amilius Clarke of High Street, Bangor, who ran a photography business in the town. He had a brother called Eugene who was a dentist at Bangor and a sister Therese who married a man called Jones and lived at Deganwy. Amilius Clarke's son, also Amilius, set up a photography business in Bethesda, but moved back to Bangor after his father's death, c. 1905. Another son of Amilius Clarke senior, John Duval Clarke, who was a private in the Royal Marine Light infantry, was killed in action during the First World War near the Dardanelles on June 7, 1915. Amilius Clarke junior, who died in 1932, was the grandfather of Diana Clarke, who is the conservator and archives assistant at the Archives Department of the University of Wales, Bangor.

Material is arranged in chronological order and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
