Scope and Content

William Champernoun esq declares that he has assigned 'by dede endentid' to Philip Courtenay, Thomas Stonore, Robert Reynell, esquires, and to John Denys of Orle, Harry Drewe and to Sir James Carlway, parson of the church of Dodbroke, the manors of Modbury, Dodbroke, and Brideford, Devonshire, and of Aston Ruhant [Aston Rowant], Oxfordshire, with the advowson of unspecified Devonshire churches, in order that they should secure from the revenues of these lands œ300 to pay Champernoun's debts and to 'fynde certen prestes to synge for my soule and for the soules of my auncestors'. He requires that they also find money out of some of these manors to endow a chantry at Aston Ruhant 'of old tyme providid and ordeyned be Sir Richard Champernoun', and that certain deserving householders, among them those named in his will, should receive 40s apiece. The profits of the other manors are to be taken to the use of his heirs. Six tags, with remains of four tagged pendant red round seals. Endorsed in an eighteenth-century hand: '2.E.4 / Champernown / Modbury etc'.
