Administrative / Biographical History

The Penworkers' Federation was founded in 1919, when it covered eleven firms in the Birmingham area. It represented workers making steel and metal pens. A plan to transfer its engagements to the National Union of General and Municipal Workers fell through in 1974. As a result of contraction in the industry the Federation continued an inactive existence up to 1982 and was wound up in early 1983.
