Scope and Content

Notebooks (6 vols.), c.1920-39, containing the notes for lectures and courses in civil and mechanical engineering, surveying and building construction, taught by Mann at University College Southampton, along with notes from texts, industrial visits and experiments (e.g. river gauging at Woodmill, Swaythling, 1939).

Administrative / Biographical History

E.E.Mann took an MSc at the University of Leeds. He was appointed lecturer in civil engineering and surveying at the University College Southampton by 1920, and subsequently in civil and mechanical engineering. He was promoted to a senior lectureship by 1933 and was secretary of the Faculty of Engineering. In 1933, he was a member of the Oxford University Expedition to Spitzbergen, responsible for the base party and survey work over a large area neighbouring the base camp.
