Deals with the Dean's arrest on 20th January 1971, the charge in Johannesburg Magistrate's court and his release on bail; cuttings on South African government harassment of Anglican and other church officials; events from 26th February 1971 to 7th August 1971 including police raids on church property, church criticism of government policy and the detention of Mrs Helen Joseph. Clippings from 7th August 1971 to 3rd November 1971, describing the trial and the details of his sentencing to five years imprisonment.

Administrative / Biographical History

Canon ffrench-Beytagh, Anglican Dean of Johannesburg 1965 - 1972, was charged in Pretoria in 1971-72 under the Terrorism Act. He was sentenced to five years' imprisonment but the sentence was quashed on appeal after the evidence of state witnesses had been rejected. He later moved to England.
