Gary Warren Hart (b 1936), originally a native of Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kansas, wasmanager of Senator George McGovern's presidential campaign, 1970-1972, aDemocratic Party senator for Colorado, 1975-1987 and a candidate in theDemocrats' Presidential nominations, 1984 and 1988. He was also a sometimeappellate attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice, a special assistantat the U.S. Department of the Interior, and senior counsel to the law firm,Coudert Brothers. He co-chaired the U.S. Commission on National Security/21stCentury, and established a reputation in the Senate as a political reformer,contributing to defense policy, advocating measures to make the intelligence servicesmore accountable and introducing measures to make the United States moreenergy independent. He also forecast a major terrorist attack on the UnitedStates before the attacks of 11th September 2001. The author of several books, including three novels, helives in Colorado with his wife, Lee, with whom he has had two children.
