Administrative / Biographical History
This private bank was formed in 1807 as Strange, Garrett, Strange & Cook and was otherwise known as the Swindon Bank. James Strange, a draper and mercer as well as a banker, died in 1826, and his elder brother Thomas, a coal factor and salt merchant, acquired his banking business. Shortly afterwards the bank was renamed T & R Strange & Company. A second branch was opened at Highworth when the bank was restyled the Swindon & Highworth Bank. The bank was acquired by the County of Gloucester Banking Company (est. 1836) in 1842.
