The collection consists mainly of printed poetry, with a few studies of poets and poetry and some prose fiction. It falls into several main categories:

Anne Stevenson was born in England of American parents in 1933, and grew up and was educated in the USA. She studied at the University of Michigan in the early 1950s, and worked and studied in both the UK and the USA until the 1970s, from whenshe mainly lived in the UK. Since the late 1990s she lived in Durham. She published poetry and criticism for some sixty years, her work most recently collected in Poems 1955-2005 published by Bloodaxe, who published hermost recent work Astonishment in 2012.
