BURDETT-COUTTS PAPERS

Papers of Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906), Baroness Burdett-Coutts of Highgate and Brookfield (1871). The papers principally concern the development of the colonial church and its legal status in relation to the Church of England. Baroness Burdett-Coutts endowed the sees of Capetown and Adelaide in 1847 as sees dependent on the Church of England (1384), but in consequence of the dispute between Robert Gray, Bishop of Capetown, and John William Colenso, Bishop of Natal, she feared that the colonial church might claim independence of the Church of England. Many of the papers are concerned with her petition to Queen Victoria on this matter, and an attempt to assert the dependence of the colonial church by legislative action in Parliament in 1865-6. In other volumes are papers relating to her interest in the colonial church elsewhere in Africa and Australia, and in Canada, the West Indies, India, Hong Kong, and Labuan and Sarawak (1385-6). A small quantity of papers concern her interest in education, particularly in the spread of the school grouping system (1387), and various charitable works in Carlisle, London, and Great Yarmouth (1388).
