Administrative / Biographical History
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, were initially occupied by members of the royal family, establishing gardens designed by famous designers of the day, such as Capability Brown. Collections of plants of economic, scientific or horticultural interest were made from all over the world. The gardens were given to the state in 1840, becoming a national botanical institute.
