Administrative / Biographical History
Foundation
In 1805 Thomas Eyton, receiver-general of Shropshire and a local landowner, formed a banking partnership at Wellington with two industrial entrepreneurs, John Wilkinson and Joseph Reynolds. The bank offered assistance to local industrialists. By 1828 the firm was Reynolds, Charlton & Co., with premises in the Market Place, Wellington.
Takeover
In 1836 the private firm amalgamated with Horden & Hill, Darby & Co. and Biddle, Mountford, Pidcock & Cope to form the Shropshire Banking Company (taken over by Lloyds in 1874). Although all four private banks were well-established at the time of the amalgamation, they joined forces to be able to compete against many other joint-stock banks that were being formed at the time.
