The National Association of Men Teachers (NUMT) was formed in 1919 within the National Union of Teachers (NUT). In 1920 it broke away from the larger union and became the National Association of Schoolmasters (NAS). This in turn merged with the Scottish Schoolmasters' Association and the Union of Women Teachers in 1976 to become the National Association of Schoolmasters / Union of Women Teachers.

The Centre also holds the papers of the Assistant Masters' and Mistresses' Association (MSS.299), Association of Assistant Mistresses (MSS.59) and National Union of Teachers (MSS.179).

The records of a number of branches of the ASM are held in local record offices, including Lincolnshire, Calderdale (West Yorkshire) and Northamptonshire.
