Administrative / Biographical History

NBNZ was founded in 1872. Although technically located in London, operations were carried out in Dunedin. It established branches in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch within a year of opening. In 1894, New Zealand headquarters moved from Dunedin to Wellington.

In 1919 Lloyds Bank acquired a small interest in NBNZ and acquired it outright in 1966.

In 1978, the bank's head office was moved from London to Wellington and the Black Horse became its symbol. Throughout the 1980s, NBNZ consolidated banking services in New Zealand by acquiring Southpac Investment Management Limited, The Rural Bank Limited and the Countrywide Banking Corporation.

In 2003 the Austalia and New Zealand Banking Group purchased NBNZ from Lloyds TSB. In 2012, ANZ National Bank CEO announced he would drop the National Bank brand in favour of the ANZ one.
