Scope and Content

Records of Eliot, Pearce & Company relating to its operation and acquisition by Capital & Counties Bank, including small deposit interest rates, purchase agreements and financial statements.

Administrative / Biographical History

This bank was formed in 1791 as Bower & Bower. Following partnership changes it later became known as Eliot, Pearce & Eliot. It was also styled Weymouth Old Bank. Branches were established at Dorchester, Portland Bournemouth and Boscombe. The bank encountered financial difficulties in the 1890s, which were exacerbated by involvement in unsuccessful land speculation in Dorchester. It failed in 1897, when Capital & Counties Bank (est. 1877) acquired its business.
