Administrative / Biographical History

In November 1960 the first association for the advancement of state education was formed in Cambridge as a result of dissatisfaction with conditions at one particular local school. Further local associations were formed following press publicity beginning in June 1961. In January 1962 delegates from all associations formed the Joint Committee for the Advancement of State Education to provide a means of communication between local associations and to express the views of members at national level. This led to the formation of the Confederation for the Advancement of State Education (later renamed the Campaign). One of the aims of the movement was the full implementation of the 1944 Education Act.
