Sarmiento Papers

Scope and Content

Letters to Sarmiento concerning poetry, publications and literature. Seventeen letters from the Spanish poets Manuel Altolaguirre and his wife Concha Mendez (1934-1935), 18 from Luis Cernuda, with copies (1938-1940), and about 20 from Aubrey Bell (1936-1947). Manuscript poem of Altolaguirre with transcript. Facsimile edition of manuscript poems of Jos Silva's 'El Libro de Versos' (1945), and photocopies of various articles about Silva. Translations of poems by St John of the Cross, and other poems by Sarmiento; together with 2 letters from Sarmiento to Jim Cummins of the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at UCL (1976-1986).

Sarmiento was a student at University College London from 1925 to 1928. He went on to become a Professor.

Presented by Edward Sarmiento in April 1977, August 1980, and July 1981. Also given by J S Cummins of the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at UCL in March 1988.
