The Portuguese Workers' Branch (Secção dos Trabalhadores Portugueses) of the Transport and General Workers' Union was formed in April 1972 by Portuguese workers employed in hotels, restaurants and hospitals in Britain, and held its inaugural meeting on 14 May 1972. Shortly after its formation the branch was opened to workers of other nationalities and renamed the International Workers' Branch.
The International Workers' Branch was involved in various industrial disputes during the 1970s, the most high-profile of which was the 18 month strike at the Garners Steak Houses chain of restaurants.
The papers were collected by Alvaro de Miranda, a founding member and the branch's first chairman; the digital copy of a cine film was added to the collection by Claude Moreira.
